Dear Melissa,
I have to hand it to you.
That pic of you sitting gloating triumphantly behind the huge male lion you killed has gone viral.
I’m not saying that people aren’t admiring your big strong teeth or even your big strong breast implants.
But your timing was all kinds of special. A week after we hear that the western black rhino is officially extinct, you post this picture of yourself on all your social media sites. Now you are front page news in many countries. Even the comedian Ricky Gervais has weighed in. He thinks you are a great hunt. Typo.
When a man wantonly destroys one of the works of man we call him a vandal. What then do we call a person who shoots a wild animal?
Not for food, or even for their pelt. Just for pleasure.
Help me on this. I want to understand what frisson of pleasure do you get when you see a creature toppling to its knees? Which do you prefer? A crocodile? Or a giant bear? Which turns you on more? Heaven knows you have killed enough species to be an expert.
Do you have any feelings at all? Apart from vanity, that is.
I see from all your pictures, you wouldn’t dream of going on a hunt without heavily mascara-ed eyelashes, a piece of statement jewellery, your glossy hair, neatly braided…
Perhaps that adds to the revulsion people feel when looking at you with your ‘trophies.’ Because you see, sweetie, equality of the sexes, like Communism, is great on paper. In reality it is something else. Biologically a woman is the giver of life.
When she takes life it is an aberration. When she takes life for fun it is perverse.
Your utter disregard for animals and nature is breath-taking.
I read that you desired to kill an adult male lion as it is the most sought-after trophy by wealthy foreign hunters.
The Maroi ‘Conservancy’ gang – Hannes, Laurens and Julious (sic), did your bidding and imported a lion to the area so that you could kill it. I know that you know that this is called canned hunting.
Trophy hunting is an obscenity beyond the obvious one. Trophy hunting for lion is killing healthy members of an imperiled species.
Do you know or even care that when an adult male lion is killed, the destabilization of that lion’s pride can lead to more lion deaths as outside males compete to take over the pride? Read National Geographic and learn a few things. I know I did.
Once a new male is in the dominant position, he will often kill the cubs sired by the pride’s previous leader, resulting in the loss of an entire lion generation within the pride.
Trophy hunting by definition is counter-evolutionary. It is based on selectively taking the large, robust, and healthy males from a population for a hunter’s trophy room.
These are the same crucial individuals that in a natural system would live long, full lives, protecting their mates and cubs and contributing their genes to future generations.
See why everyone thinks you are bloodless, callous and recidivist?
Your grinning happily behind a dead lion has shocked people in a country that is almost unshockable.
In South Africa rape and murder are commonplace. Let’s be more explicit. Baby rapes are prevalent. But it took your narcissistic exploits to energize a country that is compassion-fatigued.
Amid the sad and irritating news which leaves the populace numbed by your career of legalized poaching – murdering – animals touched raw nerve ends. Hunting for sport is bloody and antiquated.
In a mere four days the Stop Melissa Bachman Facebook page has had over 95,000 hits.
You awakened a vast tribe of anti-hunters who are intent on urging the international animal protection community to muster support for the plight of animals and the environment.
For that I thank you.
The website of the Maroi Conservancy – your enablers – has crashed.
When the site was up there was some feeble defense along the lines of ‘providing employment to the locals’ and ‘conservation’.
Since when does killing an almost endangered species count as ‘conservation?’ You’ve been drinking too many Klipdrifs and coke with the manne.
The money that does come into Africa from hunting pales in comparison to the billions and billions generated from tourists who come just to watch wildlife.
According to National Geographic, despite the claims that trophy hunting brings millions of dollars in revenue to local people in otherwise poor communities, there is no proof of this.
Even pro-hunting organizations like the International Council for Game and Wildlife Conservation have reported that only 3 percent of revenue from trophy hunting ever makes it to the communities affected by hunting.
National Geographic published a story in which Jeff Flocken, the North American director for the International Fund for Animal Welfare wrote; The United States government is considering whether to add lions to the list of species protected by the Endangered Species Act. Such protection would ban the importation of dead trophy lions into the U.S.
A recent study led by a scientist from Duke University showed that as few as 32,000 lions are left. Approximately 600 lions are killed every year on trophy hunts – 80% are killed by Americans.
A few years ago I read about a South African woman who was attacked by a male ostrich. She engaged it in a fight to the death with her bare hands and managed to strangle it. An ostrich has a kick stronger than a mule and their toe-nails are sharper than a serpent’s tooth. She was knocked to the ground several times and suffered a couple of broken ribs and a punctured lung. Perhaps the whole of the human race would have celebrated your “victory” if you had been attacked by the male lion and managed to kill it with your bare hands.
I don’t know if you have ever heard of a bloke called Mahatma Gandhi. I don’t think his name comes up a great deal in the bomas you hang out in after a good day of killing. He once said “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”
Given this premise I am afraid you and your animal killing chums are egregious, recidivist and morally bankrupt.
Yours etc. Jani
P.S. Isn’t it deeply ironic that “Melissa” means honey and sweet?

Read Jani Allan’s column on rhino poaching here
Thank you Jani for speaking with such intelligent passion on behalf of all of us who are horrified and sickened by the actions of this abhorrent woman.
well said Jani.
Great letter!
I read the entire page. Wow they are absolutely blasting my favorite hunter chick. Can’t blame them for that either. The numbers they quoted about hunters in Africa are obviously written by the anti-hunters. They forgot to mention that the locals will, strange as it seems, will eat this lion. Was it actually caught and released for her to kill, who knows. Sadly I wouldn’t doubt it. The people who go to Africa to take pictures spend about $5000, Bet she paid, well her pro-team staff paid in excess of $50,000 just for the permit. Elephants are over $100,000 for a permit. And yes there are places where populations of lions and elephants way over exceed the location. Truly the habitat is in a lot more danger, from big industry loggers, local farmers, and poachers, who are destroying the landscape in the name of potatoes, sugarcane, and corn. Killing all animals that are considered a threat to them and there way of life. Despite the right or wrong Melissa’s money at least went to the preservation of lands. Not the destruction of land so the anti’s can eat brussel sprouts, and beans. Besides, most hunts of these type’s are preformed by professional hunters who know that this male has reached the age he’s been run off by another male and is on his last leg. Give it up Anti’s.I don’t agree with what she did in the name of Tv, but seriously burkenstocks are made with leather, and hundreds of thousands of acre’s of forest land, and animals have been destroyed or displaced just for the soybeans they love so much. So bight me anti’s!!!
John Grass
Can’t even spell bite correctly! Any person who destroys an animal for pleasure is a disgusting peice of human garbage! And hunting animals does NOTHING for conservation… its a big lie the killers love to use to justify their blood lust. That money goes into the pockets of the game providers and the corrupt government. If hunters cared so damned much about conservation like they say they do, they would directly donate that money to REAL places that are saving and protecting animals and they wouldn’t murder them! Your argument is horseshit and you are ignorant.
Brilliantly written Jani.
She is a disgusting, repulsive excuse for a human being. I don’t know how she could possibly live with herself and I hope karma catches up with her real soon……An eye for an eye!
Thank you for for posting this and articulating what so many of us and thinking and feeling x
What a douchebag.
Thank you, I couldn’t have said it better myself. I sure hope that this reaches her & other “trophy” hunters. What they do is barbaric, antiquated, sick, mean, inhumane and evil.
Thank you Jani. Canned hunting is the lowest of the low! and the rest as well.
Not one of you mention anything about poachers, but you attack the lady for legally hunting? How stupid and ignorant can you all be?
It would be totally illegal for her and definitely spell jail to shoot a handsome well built man in the face so she chose to enact it out on another large male member with an authority sadly an animal… Something that could not talk back to her! Passive aggressive pleasures of humanity 😉
If you don’t like her views/ pictures then don’t comment. It doesn’t change anything. She will continue to hunt no matter what you have to say. Hundreds of thousands of people hunt every year she’s just one of them. If it was such a bad thing it would be illegal and it’s not. Lets worry about more serious problems like our government!
NOT true… the tide is turning. This outdated barbaric sick practice is in the world’s spotlight now and the ugly reality is showing. People are changing their minds in sweeping waves. The awful cruelty must END. So we will continue to cry out and comment. If even ONE mind is changed then it is not in vain…
Such a pathetic and wasteful thing to do to a sacred animal. If you kill it, then EAT all of it.
How can somebody take a life like that!!!!People please…stop
Awesome!!!!!
I had to make sure that photo was out of view before I started this excellent article because each time I see it, I feel as if I can’t breathe. I do hope (and believe) all of these voices against this atrocious act will help put an end to the cowardly practice of trophy hunting. Unfortunately, I don’t think any of it will effect Melissa Bachman in any way. Narcissistic sociopaths like herself feed off of attention, positive or negative, it is all the same to them. I can almost feel her gloating at the controversy she’s stirred up. Yet, if all the controversy helps to end these ghastly slaughters, then the death of that beautiful creature will not have been in vain.
Well said. I could never have put to words how utterly disgusted I am by this woman and her fellow murderers.
I hope and pray your words hot a nerve with this seemingly heartless woman! Wish I could have said it myself!
Well said !!!!!!!!! Thank you 4 writing this!!!!!
What a boyle on society Melissa Bachman is. She’s clearly morally infantile. Maybe her head should be on the wall of hunting lodge somewhere. Personally I wouldn’t urinate on her if she was on fire. What a vile human being ( if you can put her in that category )
Strong opinions on what is obviously an emotive topic – with good reason. Here is an article on the topic of Melissa by a well known South African Journo, written for an online newspaper I follow. http://www.dailymaverick.co.za/article/2013-11-18-analysis-melissa-bachman-and-online-misogyny/
Funny. I saw this same picture of the lion before on the internet only there was a man and a blonde woman behind it. Fake is fake I guess.
We should send her to be hunted by lions and see how she feel.
If they aren’t on the endangered species list, then it’s A-OK and she should not be getting harassed for doing so. I don’t think the whiny tree huggers realize that if people didn’t hunt deers in America, etc they would overpopulate, then run out into the road (happens ALL the time). Let’s see if you whine about hunting when deers overpopulate, then run out into the street at night and cause a bad wreck and your entire family rightfully dies. Let’s also factor in, starvation, etc. Or how about overpopulation of bears, coyotes, mountain lions, all things that are known to harm kids and pets, gee I wonder what would happen if we no longer hunted them and they overpopulated, I hope their dogs, cats, or children are eaten or mauled.
They have limits to how much you can legally hunt per season. There’s a thing called hunting season. You can only kill one lion a year per person. There’s also yearly limits on pretty much every wildlife. The majority of hunters eat the majority of the things they shoot and kill, a few hunt just for sport, or some will take down something like this on occasion. But I don’t see the appeal in hunting, unless you have a bow, it’s just simply not appealing to go into the wild with a high caliber rifle and shooting something intellectually inferior to you 200 yards away..But meh. Go ahead and move along morons with your faux outrage hopping on the current “it” bandwagon..
You are a callous cold poor excuse for a human. YOU are what is wrong with this world.
The lion is NOT an endangered species. The thrill of the hunt is enough. Stop acting like a group of fag-vegs that cant see blood. Grow a fuckin spine. If we depended on you we wouldnt have made it past the last great ice age… you know… the know that reduced the human population to under 10.000… and that basically made us drive the mammoth to extinction. Stop action like little fags.. really…
WOW, notreally. Real mature. Real compassionate and well spoken of you… Nice use of the word ‘fag’… now we all know you are homophobic.
Like every comment here – this is an amazing letter to ‘her’ I don’t kn ow if she could feel shame
but for sure, one day she will feel pain… Then maybe she will grow as a human being
I’d love to know what SHE is saying about all of this.
Looks like that is a great trophy! Bet it’s going to look great as a throw rug, or even better stuffed!
You can’t blame this stupid woman. It’s not her fault that she has been raised to become an ignorant red neck. She hasn’t got the inteligence to know what she is doing. Nor does she realise how much she is hated by so many people. Take the gun away from her & she can’t do any more damage to the world or herself. The first thing to do is take her off the air.
Before ANYONE (INCLUDING YOU JANI) starts bashing Melissa AGAIN,
You need to read this article and then check yourself, and realize what your article is about is garbage.
http://dailycaller.com/2013/11/25/stop-demonizing-hunters-like-melissa-bachman/
Now last time I checked, my previous post wasn’t posted (it still says ‘awaiting approval from a mod’ or something like that), because, you read my post and didn’t like ANYTHING I said, and you know I’m right, so you don’t want any of your readers to know it.
So, make sure people can see this post, and they can read that article
You sir are trying to support a twisted, woman who gleefully smiles over dead corpses and promoting ‘trophy hunting’ which is despicable under the so called ‘veil’ for conservation purposes. There are many other means for conservation and please don’t justify these barbaric savages with this stupid excuse ENOUGH !!!
“Lions are not listed as an endangered species, nor are any of the other animals and birds Bachman poses with on her website. In fact, lawful hunting serves a vital role in managing overpopulation, reducing intraspecies competition for food and shelter, and raising money for conservation.”
OK – this is why you need to stop reading the Daily Caller. There is ground between endangered and overpopulation. In this case Lion are listed as THREATENED, making everything this guy says a joke. These aren’t rabbits or possums breeding out of control an threatening local crops. This is a species that could very well enter the endangered list should current conditions continue.
Every wild African animal is listed as “threatened”, “endangered” or “close to extinction” in the wild because of poachers who are mostly poor and black who get paid a pittance by dodgy Asian losers to kill animals to cure their small dick syndrome. But on game farms which breed them, they are none of the above and they are hunted / culled by rich white hunters who pay a lot of cash for the privilege. The real ars-holes are the Asian men with small dicks who pay top dollar for dodgy animal products. If we could convince the authorities to allow rich white hunters to cull these small dicked Asian bastards, and get Hollywood producers to create reality TV shows about these canned hunts, I’d be entertained for the rest of my long life.
Richard – that is a sincerely stupid answer. Yes – they’re threatened in the wild because of poaching. That doesn’t mean they are suddenly not threatened because game parks exist.
The argument made by the Daily Caller article (don’t get me started on Tucker Carlson’s ignorant mag) was that the activity should be legal because they’re not endangered, therefore they should be hunted because it will lead to over population.
Your argument – they’re threatened in this place, but not that place – is just non-sense. If you check the website of the Maroi Conservancy, where this took place, you can see the species list they allow for hunting. Lions aren’t on it. That’s because they are not born and breed on the farm. The lion was captured externally and brought to the safari for her to shoot.
Dear Geoff, overpopulation of Lion does not mean globally, but could mean overpopulation of Lion on the specific peace of land that belong to the game reserve. Now before you tell me, but why don’t you just transport them to a place where there is no Lion, I will say this, you don’t just call a taxi to transport wild animals, It is extremely expensive, with the help of vets required etc etc. Now I am sure a lot of the animals are sold at auction as well, but sometimes it is financially more viable to rather hunt them. Lets leave the professional running of game reserves to the professionals, seems they know what they are doing, as some of these reserves have been operating for decades, and the fact they still have animals means they pretty much know what they are doing.
Skiballas – I’m still tracking down all of the particulars on this, but lets go through the facts as known:
– The conservancy does not normally offer lions for their hunt, they had to import a lion just for Melissa Bachman.
– There is a thriving business in South Africa for canned hunts (which is what this was). Lions are bred in cages and released into the wild with the sole purpose of providing sport for rich hunters. No steps are taken to acclimatise them to the wild. There is no over-population problem – there is a commerce problem.
– Lions are currently listed as a vulnerable species by the IUCN (International Union for the Conservation or Nature). The USFWS (United States Fish and Wildlife Service) has been debating whether to move the lion on to the endangered species list.
– As far as can be established, there owners of these lion breeding business do not have any involvement with the animal conservation movement, other than places like the Maroi occasionally buying an animal from them for this purpose. They are strictly for-profit ventures.
– Yes, some of the demand for this hunting comes from South East Asian countries, but 60% of the market for canned hunts comes from the USA. Richard, if you want to issue a correction, the phrase would be small-dicked US bastards, just to be fair. We are all angry at poaching and the trade in endangered species to South East Asia. Does not mean we shouldn’t be angry when the demand is coming from the US.
So yes, this is more complicated that presented, but it still seems pretty clear cut to me. Over here we have a vulnerable species, currently at around 32000 in number, less than 10% of the population for this same animal a century ago. It is at a point where we are debating what we should do to protect this species, how long it will be before we need to take drastic measures to protect it.
Over here we have an industry that breeds these animals with the sole purpose of providing sport to wealthy Americans. There is no connection to conservation. They take an animal that is, anywhere else, a vulnerable species, and they exploit it for shits and giggles.
And here we have an American television celebrity taking pride in her accomplishment of killing a lion bred for her pleasure. She posts this on the web for both her own sense of satisfaction, but lets be honest, for her own profit.
Technically, yes, I am most disgusted at the industry that does this and the government that allows this to happen. That doesn’t stop me being disgusted at the woman that would parade this horror for pride and profit. And should it encourage one other wealthy person to put their money together and head to South Africa – yes, I feel justified in my disgust.
Well put Geoff. It’s about time we started telling it like it is!
You are such an idiot. Everything you say is either an outright lie or just plain ignorant. But you hit an all time low with the comment that just because “some of these reserves have been operating for decades, and the fact they still have animals means they pretty much know what they are doing.” No the fact is, these canned hunts have only begun to be exposed for the travesty they are and these “reserves” that push this obscene behavior are now being exposed and hopefully will be shut down by an international outcry. There is no sound reason for lions to be bred to be killed in canned hunts or for lions in the wild to be hunted. It is all for the vanity of rich and heartless jerks and money for the inhumane and greedy owners.
Thank you glen
Thank you for sending this letter to Miss Melissa who doesn’t have a clue about animal welfare and PETA. She should watch Earthlings and get a clue about others sharing this planet earth. She’s a disgrace to human kind…
My sentiments exactly!
Bravo Jani!
DISGUSTING, REVOLTING KILLER
My last comment was directed at Skiballas.
Again Mara, you are correct. If you want to transfer wild game, call a taxi, I think the average rate for transporting them to another reserve is about R400 a shot. I was ignorant to think vets are required to tranquilize them, and theat special arrangements have to be made for their transport. Its not expensive at all, so please, people with limited space on your reserves, if you have too many lion to sustain, please call a cab and send some to another reserve.
Oh and the reserves that have been trading for decades, yes, you clearly also dont know what you were doing, cos you had a billion head of animals, now you have 2, how do you stay in business?
I’d never heard of this woman until she appeared on fb behind her victim (Aslan and Snow Witch), so I checked her website out briefly. specifically the page called ‘childhood’, which has photos of her posing with various dead animals. The tragedy is that she has been bred to kill, and will continue to unless something drastic happens to change her mindset. There is also a photo of her playing with a dog. I wonder how she would have felt if someone had shot that particular animal??
This kind of “hunting” is the height of cowardice. And, the suffering inflicted on animals, this kind of senseless and barbaric destruction, only exacerbates the suffering on this planet. I would like to suggest that those who object to the totally unnecessary killing of this beautiful animal, also consider the suffering of billions of animals that are unnecessarily bred, kept and killed in hideous ways for our ‘food’. Raise your consciousness! We know the hunting of lions is wrong, and not just because they are ‘almost’ endangered. “For as long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other. Indeed, he who sows the seed of murder and pain cannot reap joy and love” – Pythagoras
“Be the change that you want to see in the world” – Mahatma Gandhi
Love to all
Omg cry about it… Nice shot girl!
brilliant writing…… this woman is atrocious…. she should be….. well I have no more words..
Very well written. This woman is disgusting.
she deserves to be thrown into the same scenario her helpless victims have been …. throw her to the animals to defend herself with her own devices… no guns, knives or sticks even.. after all she doesn’t give her victims any weapons to fight back with, why should she have the luxury. Without the damn gun she is nothing…. what a sickening and horrid person. I hope her soul rots in hell.
How depressing. This picture represents the King of the Jungle and the ultimate low-life scum of the earth. In the last 100 years, 98% of all lions have been killed, reducing their populations to just 19,000 in the whole of Africa. I work for national parks in Malawi and I can tell you that by shooting this beautiful male, this ignorant woman has probably killed another 8 lions, including the cubs, in the fight for dominance her selfish act of entertainment triggers. Trophy hunters have halved lion populations in the last decade. Future generations will curse their intense ignorance and selfishness; all for a few seconds of fun. It absolutely defies belief. I am ashamed to be part of the same race as this horrible woman.
What a useless piece of trash.
This letter is the ultimate in slacktivism. When I first saw the family photo of the dead elephant I was upset. i love animals and dont condone their killing for sport (perhaps with a bow but thats another topic) But the bottom line is she is doing something I believe she is legally able to do. You dont see this kind of viral slacktivism about people that smoke with their kids in the car or parents that let their kids eat at McDonalds every night. In this letter you mention the billions that is made off safaris for photos and observation. perhaps start there. Start a campaign to boycott African safaris in general. if the real source of the revenue dries up perhaps governments will take a stronger stance against this sort of thing. If it only trophy hunting only accounts for 3% of the revenue who gives a crap about some whiney holier than thou first world people who want to bully some woman off the air for doing something they dont agree with but is legal to do.
It is a sad state of affair when this is the viral news of the day.
We have the Fukashima reactor on critical meltdown potentially causing a world catastrophe
We have Manning, Snowden and Julien Assange in hiding or prison for speaking out against the US government spying on its own people and committing other vile acts in the name of freedom
We have an economic crisis still ongoing that is threatening the future for our kids all well destroying the environment at the same time and all I see is Facebook posts about Kim and Kanye in a video, Van Damme doing the splits and people shooting hunting ,
I bet if it was a wild boar it wouldnt get the same press…..
Sad state of affairs
I hope this writer and all the people who have written comments below are vegetarian? A billion (yes, at least a billion) animals are slaughtered each year to ‘feed’ the united states population. The people who eat these animals do not kill them themselves and look them in the eye; they have someone else do it (mainly in a factory). These animals are often kept in starkly cruel conditions in pain and suffering. This lion (an animal like all others) lived a life in the wild, able to mate; run and be free before it was shot. Why is one animal due this pleasure and not another? Why the outcry for a free animal and not one kept in the prison that is a slaughterhouse? That is why I no longer eat meat. The hypocrisy amongst humans is as shameful as it is baffling.
I am a Christian and love all God’s creations. The Bible teaches me not to judge but when i discover that people i know hunt, i somehow think less of them as a human being. Sometimes to the point of disgust. This female “thing” makes me sick. If she wanted to get that close to a lion she should have been in Daniel’s shoes. Methinks the smile wouldn’t be that broad ……..
You can pay your fine now….mentally
Jani, You immediately weaken your argument by commenting on her breast implants; how do you even know? You’re dead wrong to attack her personally because that’s not your point. All those who think you write brilliantly are simply responding to the very black and white issue of big-game hunting. Melissa becomes an easy target, and you don’t even hit the mark.
The problem here has much further implications : where does a mob’s attitude yield for, and respect, personal liberty ? Emotional issues are are the billboards on the road to totalitarianism.
So WELL said! My husband asks, “What’s next? Elementary school kids?” Defenseless creatures seem to be her thing.
You Put It Absolutely brilliantly. She’s a Bloody Idiot!!!!!!!!! Xoxo
I Have shred this on my facebook. Only someone with a lot of money and who is not in touch with the real world in fact reality would happily sit with gleaming teeth after killing such a majestic animal. Whether it helps with the local economy by having a place where the rich can play at killing animals is not the point here. The point is that this type of activity in this age and at this time of our evolution must stop. We cant keep killing and rapping our natural world and its resources any more. Well done Jani.
