Dear Melissa,
I have to hand it to you.
That pic of you sitting gloating triumphantly behind the huge male lion you killed has gone viral.
I’m not saying that people aren’t admiring your big strong teeth or even your big strong breast implants.
But your timing was all kinds of special. A week after we hear that the western black rhino is officially extinct, you post this picture of yourself on all your social media sites. Now you are front page news in many countries. Even the comedian Ricky Gervais has weighed in. He thinks you are a great hunt. Typo.
When a man wantonly destroys one of the works of man we call him a vandal. What then do we call a person who shoots a wild animal?
Not for food, or even for their pelt. Just for pleasure.
Help me on this. I want to understand what frisson of pleasure do you get when you see a creature toppling to its knees? Which do you prefer? A crocodile? Or a giant bear? Which turns you on more? Heaven knows you have killed enough species to be an expert.
Do you have any feelings at all? Apart from vanity, that is.
I see from all your pictures, you wouldn’t dream of going on a hunt without heavily mascara-ed eyelashes, a piece of statement jewellery, your glossy hair, neatly braided…
Perhaps that adds to the revulsion people feel when looking at you with your ‘trophies.’ Because you see, sweetie, equality of the sexes, like Communism, is great on paper. In reality it is something else. Biologically a woman is the giver of life.
When she takes life it is an aberration. When she takes life for fun it is perverse.
Your utter disregard for animals and nature is breath-taking.
I read that you desired to kill an adult male lion as it is the most sought-after trophy by wealthy foreign hunters.
The Maroi ‘Conservancy’ gang – Hannes, Laurens and Julious (sic), did your bidding and imported a lion to the area so that you could kill it. I know that you know that this is called canned hunting.
Trophy hunting is an obscenity beyond the obvious one. Trophy hunting for lion is killing healthy members of an imperiled species.
Do you know or even care that when an adult male lion is killed, the destabilization of that lion’s pride can lead to more lion deaths as outside males compete to take over the pride? Read National Geographic and learn a few things. I know I did.
Once a new male is in the dominant position, he will often kill the cubs sired by the pride’s previous leader, resulting in the loss of an entire lion generation within the pride.
Trophy hunting by definition is counter-evolutionary. It is based on selectively taking the large, robust, and healthy males from a population for a hunter’s trophy room.
These are the same crucial individuals that in a natural system would live long, full lives, protecting their mates and cubs and contributing their genes to future generations.
See why everyone thinks you are bloodless, callous and recidivist?
Your grinning happily behind a dead lion has shocked people in a country that is almost unshockable.
In South Africa rape and murder are commonplace. Let’s be more explicit. Baby rapes are prevalent. But it took your narcissistic exploits to energize a country that is compassion-fatigued.
Amid the sad and irritating news which leaves the populace numbed by your career of legalized poaching – murdering – animals touched raw nerve ends. Hunting for sport is bloody and antiquated.
In a mere four days the Stop Melissa Bachman Facebook page has had over 95,000 hits.
You awakened a vast tribe of anti-hunters who are intent on urging the international animal protection community to muster support for the plight of animals and the environment.
For that I thank you.
The website of the Maroi Conservancy – your enablers – has crashed.
When the site was up there was some feeble defense along the lines of ‘providing employment to the locals’ and ‘conservation’.
Since when does killing an almost endangered species count as ‘conservation?’ You’ve been drinking too many Klipdrifs and coke with the manne.
The money that does come into Africa from hunting pales in comparison to the billions and billions generated from tourists who come just to watch wildlife.
According to National Geographic, despite the claims that trophy hunting brings millions of dollars in revenue to local people in otherwise poor communities, there is no proof of this.
Even pro-hunting organizations like the International Council for Game and Wildlife Conservation have reported that only 3 percent of revenue from trophy hunting ever makes it to the communities affected by hunting.
National Geographic published a story in which Jeff Flocken, the North American director for the International Fund for Animal Welfare wrote; The United States government is considering whether to add lions to the list of species protected by the Endangered Species Act. Such protection would ban the importation of dead trophy lions into the U.S.
A recent study led by a scientist from Duke University showed that as few as 32,000 lions are left. Approximately 600 lions are killed every year on trophy hunts – 80% are killed by Americans.
A few years ago I read about a South African woman who was attacked by a male ostrich. She engaged it in a fight to the death with her bare hands and managed to strangle it. An ostrich has a kick stronger than a mule and their toe-nails are sharper than a serpent’s tooth. She was knocked to the ground several times and suffered a couple of broken ribs and a punctured lung. Perhaps the whole of the human race would have celebrated your “victory” if you had been attacked by the male lion and managed to kill it with your bare hands.
I don’t know if you have ever heard of a bloke called Mahatma Gandhi. I don’t think his name comes up a great deal in the bomas you hang out in after a good day of killing. He once said “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”
Given this premise I am afraid you and your animal killing chums are egregious, recidivist and morally bankrupt.
Yours etc. Jani
P.S. Isn’t it deeply ironic that “Melissa” means honey and sweet?

Read Jani Allan’s column on rhino poaching here
A must to read, BRILLIANT
someone shoot her. I’ll pay what she pa
id to murder this beautiful creature.
Agreed!!
Great article. Surely in todays sociaty with all the media and tv documentries one gets to appriceate wildlife. She and others are good looking on the outside but evil and dark on the inside. There is a natural law that states; you reap what you sow”
I totally agree with everything you say, Jani. Well done to you for a extremely well written response to that obnoxious woman. Who would want to make money from wanton killing?
Wonderful post… its a shame that people still take pride in killing wild animals when we should be all actively working on saving them. Here in India we have less than 2500 tigers and only a few hundred Asiatic lions left.. May there tribe increase….
Thank you Desi. It is heartening to know that so many people worldwide DO care about imperilled species
Ask yourself this. Why sit a 100 yards away, with a gun and claim any kind of victory when you point it, pull the trigger and watch a beautiful beast fall down. The only satisfaction i can imagine you getting, as like many who do the same is knowing how weak, unbelievably weak you are and how strong you feel kneeling over it’s dead body when that picture is taken. The majority call it being a coward, weak, empty and most importantly shallow. I sincerely hope you are unlucky enough to ever find yourself in a situation that renders you the powerless one, oh wait, I’m guessing you’ve been there many times Was you bullied at school? Not as beautiful as that girl who your childhood sweetheart fell for instead of you? let’s not try to work you out as I fear it would ALL be about YOU.. it does explain the breast implants, the fake tan, the overly white teeth, dyed hair and feeling the need to seek approval by posting this pic on a social networking site. Try dropping that gun, walking up to lion and having a fair fight???? you can put yourself right back in that place then of feeling totally, totally inadequate. Oh and you’d die!! Please do, die that is. You are the top of the tree with the terrorists, rapists and most vilest of cowards. Sleep well.
Soo well said…
Well written, Jani. You surpassed yourself
Why can’t these complacent, gun-obsessed people stay at home and shoot themselves. Those who want to “shoot” with their cameras are very welcome
How do they get their guns onto airplanes and through customs anyway, when I cannot take my nail clippers on a plane!
Saying canned trophy hunting promotes conservation is as absurd as arguing that speeding on our roads does not kill!
Brilliant. I agree entirely. You make an extremely good point. No toenail clippers on planes!
Love it!
Hi Jani,
Thank you so much for your article which I saw on my fb – it is informative and very well expressed not just about how you feel but you have represented me and a load of other people. I truly feel this trophy killing has to stop – how can this be allowed in this age? Please count me in if you want to start a campaign… Love to hear from you. Well done!
Bless. Thank you. Please follow my writing on janiallan.com
I will need all your support if we are to make a difference!
You are Hilter! You want to take away her gun, just like Hilter took away other people’s guns.
She should be thrown to the lions so thay can have their revenge
Bravo! Great piece, Jani! I will share this and hope it reaches as many folks as possible. You have made a valid argument against hunting and the egocentricity and anthropocentric values that inform this atrocious behavior.
canned hunts are digusting! end of story
this woman is a disgrace to humans. the lion wasn’t attacking her or her family ( she gets to go back to hers)
hunting for food ~ acceptable
hunting for fame ~ totally unacceptable
Dear Jani, your words are elegant and direct, though I’d be surprised if Ms. Bachman would understand the vast majority of them. Thank you for this. Your commentary actually brought tears to my eyes.
Bless Krista. Hugs.
I don’t think Melissa cares if her aktivities resultat in consequences in the lion pack or if people express their hate in what she is doing.
Maybe she would react if someone took her implants and teeth as a trophy… Actually I hope we will soon be able to see a picture simular to this but the difference is Melissa had taken the lion’s place!
Simple comment.
Thank you.
Eloquent and emotive.
Shame on you! I always thought Westerners are animal lovers! I am no Westerner, I am Chinese by origin, Malaysian by birth, British by Nationality, but disgusted by the sight of a lady holding a rifle with the foreground of a dead lion!
I know nothing about you, if you have breast implants or if you are wearing makeup in your photo with the dead lion. But I will tell you this: Killing a sentient being is probably not going to give you great karma. You seem to be quite in love with yourself! Or, do you have an amazing PR person who likes to promote your testosterone side? By the way, I am pro-firearms FOR PERSONAL PROTECTION. What gives you the right to kill an amazing animal? How can you sleep at night knowing that you killed that cat?
people will have to understand and never will evil endemic evil in people is read and is ever growing I could go on a long diatribe but doing that with people doesn’t work you face evil as a group and deal with it as you don’t you have the world you do they are so far ahead of you in their total programme its laughable all which you all deny is true and you all call conspiracy and when the ones which are proved to you and admitted by them you do not even look at I fight for the animals now by facing down the evil humans I say you should or when in 20 years your kids or fiends kids ask why didn’t you stop this what are you going to say to them mmm? If even the bulk of humans are even alive and the world is bathed in radiation and worse
Yes. Face evil as a group!
Thats disgusting !!! That is senseless. If she wants to kill a lion with a gun then the lion should be given a gun too. Make it a fair fight.
She is the worst!
And see the effort made to make the lion “pose” with her the sand is scraped and bundled beneath its chin. It’s sick.
If hunting is allowed How come we don’t let hunters free in our cities and since survival of the fittest is order of the day, using fancy weapons and such to take out the king of the safari, I am sure it’ll just be a slap on the wrist and a warning on paper for if it happens the next time.
Let’s all get hunting permits for PEOPLE then we’ll see how quickly the world changes its tune…
It Broke my heart to see that beautiful animal seemingly asleep. Sweet Lion, you have left your body but your soul is touching all of our hearts. We feel you and honor you as sacred. I pray for Melissa, may she find peace for her actions.

I have no problem with people hunting for food. I do it myself. Killing just to kill isn’t sport and it isn’t right. She makes gun owners and real hunters look bad.
I sp wished i were
capable of articulating the sentiments you did Jani, Bravo….all my thoughts and sentiments, anger, passion, resentment summed up brilliantly against this …can i say the c word…no not bad enough…repulsive disgusting savage excuse for a human…all my sentiments have already been posted….how can she be brought down…i hear she has a
tv show….i petitioned to have it taken off air……we’ll see. Or on her show, she can be put in a caged pit with all the species she has annialated, none without weapons, and then let’s watch this sport!
Thank you Dale. 🙂
This expresses my feelings. As a proliferation I get many people angry because I am against late term abortions & want to see a steady decline in abortions I am to realistic to think that they will cease to happen. But I can’t understand why some are rightly outraged at this but but not at late term abortions of little helpless babies created in most cases by the parents stupidity. My friend gave birth early at 25 weeks of gestation andl the baby survived. Many place more value on animals lives then of human life.
This isn’t about choosing the life of human’s over animals. Shooting a lion is not chosing the side of humans. I would argue it is disregarding human-ity.
I’d be the last one to cast the first stone, But after all the above I’m sure you’ll truly regret and are sorry for your action. If so, God forgives you, go in peace. Love and enjoy all our little brothers, the birds and animals who share the planet with us.
Well…Mellissa you are what this aussie calls a human piece of shit.. you make me sick to my stomache. I sincerely hope you rot in hell!!!.
agree with you completely, except that we haven’t just found out that the western black rhino subspecies is extinct. The last time it was seen was ’06 and was declared extinct by the IUCN 2 years ago…
You, right there ,,is why we lost all hope in humanity !!!!
Bravo…thank you so much for expressing so well what most of us feel…Im afraid my feelings really challenge my mostly Buddhist philosophy….I just want Melissa to suffer the same fate as these beautifuil creatures which USED to exist…
Very, very well written with solid salient points. As a conservationist, I’m disgusted.
I grew up in a hunting family, from a conservation stand-point – licensing was issued and populations were managed. Meat was taken and cooked – pelts were salted and cured. We hunted, and came back empty many times – the animals were smarter than us.
The thought of “canned” hunting anything, especially an “at risk” populus – and extra especially just for the “trophy” value is abhorrent to me.
Brilliant letter. Shame on her- disgusting excuse for a human being. Makes me sick!
Back in the 80’s I took over management of a gamereseve with a dwindling population of rhinos. The magnificent old male was getting on in years. I organized a hunt and a big fat lazy american came over and shoot the animal. The money was used to buy THREE young males and we had a growing population again. Just saying. So much ignorance here it’s incredible.
Couldn’t have said it better!!
Amazing!!!!! Every. Single. Word.
OMG! Jani, you could not have been more eloquent and you have articulated it so well!!! Let’s hope our “dear Melissa” managed to understand it…
Actually, I hope to see the roles reversed in the next pic…I pray for that day. You know what they say about Karma
please tell me that she is a conservationist and thats a tranquelizer gun and the photo was mis enterpreted
I believe Anyone who would kill any animals , just to kill for pleasure is Pure Evil and will be Harshly Judged on Judgment Day !
Whilst I question the ethics, compassion and intellect of this pathetic person, I am more concerned about the number of people who have made, albeit feeble attempts to rationalise her actions. Everyone of them would not possess the intellectual firepower to ignite a fart!
That’s actually photoshopped.
Just look at her hair.
Smudge everywhere.
It’s fuckt up what people think it’s cool to just stand by a dead Lion or even by thinking that it’s cool to make other people think she done it stills barbarian.
Hunters should be caught, and released into the savannah wild with nothing but their clothes, a bit of food and water for a week. If they can survive then maybe they would appreciate nature a little more. If they die then that’s one less murderer we have to think about. It’s not the death penalty, it’s survival of the fittest.
this letter to this “lady’ says it all and i hope many people will read it.her behavior is completely discusting.
Well written I’m afraid my choice of words towards this awful woman would be un-printable- maybe one day her and others like her will become the endangered species??
Brilliant piece of writing, echoing the sentiments of thousands upon thousands of us. We visit a place called Zoo Safari in Italy where they have. Some beautiful lions living a very contented life, and It never fails to make me emotional when I am fortunate enough to be near them. This womans soul must be dark. God forgive her.
She thinks she looks so stylish in her designer kit, and expensive rifle. But, she is SO LAST CENTURY.
Hmmm send her out in a field with high walls and gates and give the lion a gun see how much of a sport she is then, I hope she gets harassed and mocked and treated like the selfish hunt (typo) she is!
The letter is well written, like someone mentioned ‘elegent.’
What absolutely amazes me, is the reaction – everyone who comments. People from all over standing together and agreeing on this. Melissa shooting that lion and bragging about it is absolutely disgusting, but looking at the silver lining, I think allot of people started doing something about it. Even talking about it makes a difference. Hopefully people in high places and in charge of these horrid sports might have a change of heart, people taking part in it might start thinking about the life of the animal and not only the animal as a trophy. Hopefully we will see a positive outcome from this sad negative action.
In my opinion any person, who gets a kick out of killing someone or something is sick in their mind – period. Doesn’t matter if it’s another person, an endangered species or your common garden snake.
I hope your children are proud if you !
There are no words to describe the revulsion I felt seeing this photograph on Facebook.
This beautiful animal was killed needlessly for no other reason than to satisfy the blood lust of a person who does not have a heart.
May God forgive you, because no decent human being will.
